Shared-Decision Making Committee (SDMC)

Fleming Middle School Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC)

The Shared Decision Making Committee at Fleming Middle School plays a key role in shaping important aspects of campus life. This group focuses on budgeting, staffing, curriculum planning, school organization, staffing patterns, and professional development. Aligned with state legislation and HISD board policy, the SDMC brings together school and community voices to support and enhance student achievement.

The SDMC meets quarterly and as needed to discuss topics submitted by administration, staff, parents, or community members. Its primary goal is to foster a collaborative environment where all perspectives are welcomed and considered.

Committee Responsibilities

Under the leadership of the Head of School, SDMC members:

  • Serve for the duration of their elected term
  • Monitor the School Improvement Plan
  • Respond to issues brought by the Head of School
  • Raise topics for discussion and recommend solutions
  • Form ad hoc committees when needed
  • Share updates and recommendations with the broader SDMC

The Head of School helps coordinate the decision-making process, communicates with all stakeholders, considers input from the community, and ultimately makes decisions using SDMC recommendations.

Decision-Making Process

SDMC decisions are made through consensus whenever possible. While unanimous agreement isn’t required, general support from the group is necessary before moving forward. If consensus isn’t reached, the committee explores alternatives until agreement is possible. When all options have been exhausted, a majority vote may resolve the issue.

The chairperson ensures everyone has a chance to speak and that all viewpoints are respected. The Head of School may veto any decision if necessary.

Election Process

Per HISD Board Policy, the Head of School serves as SDMC chair and a co-chair is elected from the professional staff. SDMC elections are held each September by secret ballot. Elected members serve a staggered two-year term. First and second runner-ups may fill vacancies within the first nine weeks of school. After that, a new election is held to fill any open positions
